“Pres Mugabe had chest pains & difficulty breathing & he was evacuated on 01/03 2am to Singapore. Its not a routine medical review as stated,” Trends Zimbabwe website said.
Mugabe’s spokesman George Charamba said in a brief statement that Mugabe had gone for a routine medical review.
Mugabe (93) has not been to work since December 2016. He has only been to his office for a few hours to receive birthday gifts and meet well-wishers. His deputies Emmerson Mnangagwa and Phelekezela Mphoko has been running the country in his absence. Last week, the dictator who suffers from general poor health scoffed at suggestions that he should retire on age and health grounds.
Mugabe regularly gets medical treatment abroad after running down the country’s once-vibrant health sector through corruption and mismanagement. Zimbabwean doctors have been on strike for two weeks demanding more pay while senior nurses known as midwives joined the strike Wednesday.
Chaotic scenes were reported at medical facilities around the country, with thousands of sick patients going unattended.
