United States ambassador to Zimbabwe Harry K Thomas met Tuesday with leader of the opposing Movement for Democratic Change-Tsvangirai at the party’s Harvest House headquarters in Harare.
The U.S. embassy in Harare did not publicly acknowledge the meeting while the MDC-T declined to give details of what it described merely as “diplomatic engagement”.
“United States Ambassador to Zimbabwe, His Excellency Harry K. Thomas Jr. met President Morgan Tsvangirai at the latter’s offices at the MDC headquarters in Harare today,” the MDC-T said in a terse statement.
Relations between Tsvangirai have soured since 2014 when the opposition leader launched a violent campaign to get rid of internal party critics. U.S. diplomats told Now Daily they were seriously concerned about violent threats made by Tsvangirai loyalists against his deputy Thokozani Khupe, who is seen as a potential successor in the fractured opposition party.
President Barack Obama recently pledged to help democrats fighting to topple the 36 year-old dictatorship of Robert Mugabe.
