President Robert Mugabe made no mention of the birth of his daughter Bona’s son in Singapore at the weekend, in what many observers said was a surprise move.
Mugabe addressed thousands of people at the country’s independence anniversary celebrations Monday but failed to announce the birth of his grandson, who is yet to be named.
State media which the dictator controls was equally secretive about the birth at a Singapore hospital. Mugabe announced last week that his wife Grace Mugabe had travelled to the Asian country where he has a holiday home to be by their daughter’s side as she gave birth.
Zanu PF deputy information director Psychology Maziwisa confirmed the birth of Bona Mugabe and Simba Chikore’s son on Facebook.
“Congratulations to Bona and Simba Chikore on the birth of their baby boy. I’m absolutely delighted for them. Wishing them lots of excitement, happiness, and hopefully some sleep! This is great news indeed and an exciting moment, not only for them but for the entire nation,” Maziwisa said.
