Alexander Kanengoni, reported to be a Central Intelligence Organization media operations director, has died.
Kanengoni died on Tuesday, according to state media and was a war veteran and deputy editor of the shadowy rabidly pro-Zanu PF weekly publication The Patriot.
Sources said Kanengoni’s role in the CIO was to disrupt the activities of independent publishers. He was instrumental in destroying former Zimbabwe Mirror owner Ibbo Mandaza’s publishing empire before dismantling the original Financial Gazette, it was revealed.
More recently, Kanengoni engineered the disruption of The Zimbabwean’s vendor network, ensuring that London-based dissident publisher Wilf Mbanga’s paper printed in South Africa did not circulate in Zimbabwe. Kanengoni and other operatives grilled Mbanga’s Zimbabwe administrator for two hours at a CIO office in Eastlea before ordering her to ensure that The Zimbabwean’s vendors also distributed The Patriot, a move resisted by the vendors.
