A ‘senior’ operative of president Robert Mugabe’s private army, the Central Intelligence Organization and the Zimbabwe Republic Police CID detectives have exchanged gunfire over the lucrative rhino horns in Sango Valley, Chiredzi.
The incident happened on December 29 2015, resulting in the arrest of Bulawayo-based CIO operative Munashe Mudenge Murwira, while his accomplice, Dumisani Moyo was shot dead on the spot.
The CIO is now at the centre of a major conservation row after several of its top operatives were caught poaching elephants and the endangered black rhinos.
Mudenge Murwira was busted by police Central Investigations Department (CID) detectives following a tip-off after he and three others, including the deceased Moyo, killed four rhinos at Sango Valley Conservancy and ripped out the horns worth half a million dollars. Murwira had previously committed similar crimes, according to court records.
