The fate of vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa will be sealed by this weekend, with the Zanu PF constitution being amended to accommodate a female vice president, a post senior party sources say is reserved for president Robert Mugabe’s wife, Grace Mugabe.
Grace Mugabe has taken the first decisive steps in her campaign to have Zanu PF stalwart Mnangagwa removed as vice president and take over his post.
Having failed to summon enough support from the provinces to have a vote of no confidence passed against the Midlands supremo, Grace Mugabe is now leading moves to have the Zanu PF constitution amended as soon as this weekend to accommodate her as one of the vice presidents.
The women’s league, which Grace Mugabe leads, is pushing for the amendments, under the guise of changing the party constitution to include women in the so-called ‘presidium’, made up of the party president, vice presidents and national chairman, a post which Mugabe abolished.
The women’s league resolved on Wednesday to demand that one of the two vice presidents be a woman, in line with the national constitution. Ironically, this is something Grace Mugabe opposed in 2014 in her desperate bid to have former vice president Joice Mujuru removed from office. Grace Mugabe claimed at the time that there was no harm in having all the presidium posts held by men.
Grace Mugabe’s attempts to have Mnangagwa removed by popular vote collapsed on live television recently when leading members of the women’s league publicly denounced the G40 faction which she allegedly sponsors. G40 is said to be led by party commissar Saviour Kasukuwere and Mugabe’s nephew Patrick Zhuwao. Esphinah Nhari, the women’s league administrator who led the denunciation and Mnangagwa faction member Monica Mutsvangwa have now been suspended.
If the Zanu PF constitution is amended, it will be up to Mugabe to fire one of the vice presidents and appoint a woman. The choice will be his alone. Most likely, Mugabe will sack Mnangagwa and replace him with Grace Mugabe before the end of the year. Several cabinet ministers linked to Mnangagwa are also likely to lose their jobs in a move that will cost the country millions of dollars in exit packages and pension payments.
To further scuttle Mnangagwa’s chances of succeeding the ailing Mugabe as president, Grace Mugabe has demanded that her husband be declared life president, in violation of both the national and Zanu PF constitutions.
