Harare tycoon Phillip Chiyangwa was injured as he tried to retrieve cash and ‘important’ business documents amid a raging fire at his Borrowdale mansion Friday, witnesses said.
Eyewitnesses said Chiyangwa was not in the house when the fire started in his bedroom.
“When he arrived, he dashed into his bedroom, which was filled with smoke and very dark, trying to get the money and some important documents, which were not in the fireproof safe in the house. That is when he was cut by broken glass. He failed to get the money or the documents,” said a source.
Chiyangwa was treated for cuts and bruises at the Trauma Centre.
A spokesman for the Harare fire brigade said an electrical fault was suspected to be the cause of the fire.
The Ballantyne Park, Borrowdale mansion, dubbed the ‘white house’ due to its colour, was built on land controversially acquired by Chiyangwa from the Harare city council when his ‘relative’ Elijah Chanakira was chairman of a discredited commission running the city after former Zanu PF mayor Solomon Tawengwa was fired for corruption. Chiyangwa also built a mansion for Chanakira next to his own.
Chiyangwa was recently disowned by president Robert Mugabe’s nephew Patrick Zhuwao after claiming for several years that he was related to the dictator.
