Police on Tuesday detained MDC Renewal treasurer Elton Mangoma, accusing him of abusing his powers when he was energy minister two years ago, lawyers said.
Mangoma was summoned to Harare central police station where he was interrogated by detective inspector Mandizha before being charged and locked up in the police cells pending a court appearance, said the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR). Efforts by lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa to secure his release failed.
“Mangoma was charged with criminal abuse of duty as a public officer. The police claimed that Mangoma ordered the managing director of the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Development Company to cancel a tender for the sale of pre-paid electricity tokens and award it to OK Zimbabwe, one of the country’s leading retailers without going to tender,” ZLHR said.
This is Mangoma’s third arrest on similar charges since 2011, when he was acquitted before trial at the High Court.
MDC Renewal spokesperson Jacob Mafume accused the government of victimization.
