The brother of missing political activist Itai Dzamara has described as ‘malicious’ reports that he is dead.
Patson Dzamara posted the rebuttal on Facebook Wednesday after several websites claimed the abducted activist had been killed and had his body dumped in Mashonaland.
“We categorically refute stories circulating on social media seeking to inform people that Itai Dzamara has been confirmed dead,” Patson Dzamara said. “We are not privy to the details of what happened or what is happening but we perceive the hand of the same people who abducted him in the spreading of these malicious stories.”
Patson Dzamara did not say why he believed his brother was alive or give any hint about the progress of ongoing police investigations. He has been criticized for making hopeful religious statements instead of mobilising resources for a proper forensic investigation conducted by international experts in tracking kidnap victims.
“We choose to hold on to hope and shame the devil together with his agencies. We believe the report of hope and we shall not be silenced. Itai must be released,” Patson Dzamara said.
Itai Dzamara was abducted by unknown assailants in his Glen View 7, Harare neighbourhood on March 9 after calling on president Robert Mugabe to step down and organising street protests. He has been missing ever since. MDC president Morgan Tsvangirai said he feared “the worst” and likened the abduction to that of another activist, Tonderai Ndira, who later turned up dead.
