Auxillia Mnangagwa, the wife of vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa has been accused of waging a widespread campaign of violence and threats during the recent Chirumanzu-Zibagwe by-election which she won last week on a Zanu PF ticket.
Reports by independent election observers say Mrs Mnangagwa used massive intimidation to achieve voter apathy and fear. The ‘retired’ CIO operative is accused of ordering Driefontein mission hospital to close and ailing patients to attend her rallies, according to one of the damning reports.
“Sick people at Driefontein were forced to get out of their beds and go to Mrs Mnangagwa’s rally. That was very cruel,” said a senior MDC-T official in the area.
MDC-T spokesman Obert Chaurura Gutu said on Facebook on Thursday that a biometric system was essential to prevent rigging, indicating the opposition party would boycott by-elections until reforms were in place.
State radio accused monitors Zimbabwe Election Support Network, who highlighted some of the shortcomings, of fabricating evidence of rigging.
