Former military ruler Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria’s All Progressives Congress has been declared winner of the March 28 poll amid allegations of voting fraud.
President Goodluck Jonathan conceded defeat, with 12.9 million votes against northern Muslim Buhari’s 15.4 million.
Buhari has promised to end the Boko Haram menace in the besieged north, where he obtained decisively higher votes.
Jonathan, who is to officially hand over power May 29, challenged the former military strongman to deal with corruption.
General Buhari seized power in a December 1983 coup and ruled briefly until August 1985, when he was also toppled in a military takeover.
