Government on Tuesday closed the University of Zimbabwe amid rioting by students and lecturers. The students went on strike on Tuesday, a day after lecturers downed tools saying Robert Mugabe’s government had not paid their February salaries and 2014 bonuses.
On Tuesday, catering staff announced they were joining the strike, complaining about poor pay and bad working conditions.
The confrontation was set to escalate after government froze salaries for civil servants.
Violent confrontation and indefinite closure of the university were imminent, administration sources said.
