At least seven prisoners are dead while five murderers, robbers and a rapist are on the loose on the streets of Harare following Friday’s first succesful escape in more than ten years from the country’s most notorious jail, Chikurubi Maximum Prison, authoritative sources revealed.
Guards said seven prisoners had been shot dead during the rioting and not one, as admitted by Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services spokeswoman Elizabeth Banda-Karinda.
“Members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Support Unit shot the prisoners and killed seven of them. Noone died in the stampede as reported,” said a member of the security forces present on the scene on Sunday. He said prisoners had been subjected to brutal torture after rioting over food.
Meanwhile, activists have implored Amnesty International to send investigators to Chikurubi to assess the situation amid torture claims and reports of starvation of prisoners.
