The lawyer acting for Spirit Embassy sect leader Uebert Angel Mudzanire has refused to testify in the ongoing case in which the self-styled ‘prophet’ allegedly defrauded a Harare man of his $300 000 Bentley Continental.
Angel’s lawyer, Wellington Pasipanodya, authored the affidavit in which his client claimed he did not know Ndabazinengi Shava, the businessman he allegedly defrauded.
Law officer Editor Mavuto wanted the affidavit produced in court to prove that Angel had had worked with car dealer Anderson Tagara to fraudulently change the car’s ownership papers.
Tagara’s lawyer, Itayi Ndudzo, objected to the affidavit being produced in court but said Pasipanodya should be called to explain its contents.
Regional magistrate, Noel Mupeiwa ruled at the end of submissions on Thursday that forcing Pasipanodya to testify against his client would amount to violating lawyer-client confidentiality.
Angel fled to the United Kingdom when the scandal broke in 2014. The police have now issued a warrant for his arrest.
