Former public works deputy minister Guy Georgias has been exposed as a liar after earlier denying links with the disgraced HSBC Private Bank (Suisse).
The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) this week published details of Georgias’ secret account in response to his denials. ICIJ said the Zanu PF official and hatchet man for president Robert Mugabe had, indeed, maintained a secret account with HSBC in Switzerland, in violation of Zimbabwe’s exchange control and tax regulations.
The accounts were exposed in a probe dubbed ‘Swiss Leaks’ after a former HSBC banker gave the secret files to French newspaper Le Monde.
“The leaked files show that Georgias was listed alongside an account named 21151CG that, according to the file, was closed in 1995. As with many of those whose names appear in the files, Georgias’ precise link with the account is not specified,” wrote ICIJ’s Will Fitzgibbon in a report entitled, ‘Swiss Leaks a microcosm of billions lost annually in Africa’.
One report stated recently that Africa lost $50 billion annually in illegal transfers to undeclared Swiss bank accounts.
