Masvingo state minister for provincial affairs Kudakwashe Bhasikiti Chuma has been fired from government by president Robert Mugabe.
He becomes the 17th cabinet minister to be sacked since November, when the dictator launched an Idi Amin-style purge of his Zanu PF party and governnent to get rid of those with suspected links to disgraced former vice president Joice Mujuru. The purge is expected to prepare the way for the 91 year-old Mugabe’s wife Grace Mugabe to succeed him if he dies or is incapacitated through old age.
Chief secretary to the president and cabinet Misheck Sibanda said Bhasikiti’s dismissal was with immediate effect.
“In terms of section 108 (1a) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, His Excellency, the President has terminated the employment of Hon Kudakwashe Bhasikiti Chuma as Minister of State for Masvingo Province as his conduct had become inconsistent with his prescribed duties and functions,” Sibanda said in a brief statement Thursday, which did not spell out the acts of misconduct.
Bhasikiti was threatened with the sack in 2014 when Mugabe accused him of belonging to the “wrong basket”, a reference to the Mujuru faction.
