Two senior officials of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) suffered serious injuries Thursday after Zanu PF and CIO thugs attacked party president Morgan Tsvangirai’s entourage in Mabvuku.
The injured officials are ward 21 councillor Munyaradzi Kufahakutizwi and ex-councillor Peter Marange, the party said. An unknown number of party supporters were also injured when the Zanu PF hooligans set upon them with home-made weapons.
Tsvangirai’s spokesman, Luke Tamborinyoka told journalists that the former prime minister had gone to Mabvuku and Tafara to assess service delivery by the MDC-T-led Harare City Council. He was accompanied by deputy mayor Thomas Muzuva and several councillors.
“President Tsvangirai defied Zanu PF thugs who had mounted a roadblock at the Mabvuku turn-off along Harare-Mutare highway and found his way into Mabvuku,” said Tamborinyoka. “Upon seeing him enter Mabvuku, the Zanu PF thugs shouted ‘Gamatox’ and sent several cars to follow him into Mabvuku and Tafara.”
Tsvangirai went to Mabvuku police station and told the police to do their job of maintaining law and order. He said he would not be intimidated by anyone.
“The Zanu PF youths, who continued to follow the MDC leader’s convoy, attacked and brutally assaulted former councillor Peter Marange and current ward 21 councillor Munyaradzi Kufahakutizwi. State security agents and Zanu PF officials in a car labelled ‘Zanu PF Harare Province’ were co-ordinating the violence,” Tamborinyoka said.
Tsvangirai said it was unfortunate that instead of creating jobs for the youths, president Robert Mugabe’s party was abusing them to cause terror. The MDC-T leader said it was “embarrassing” for Mugabe, who is current the SADC and AU chairperson, to be “leading a party that believed in violence in this 21 century”. He said no amount of violence would stop him visiting any part of Zimbabwe.
Tsvangirai escaped unharmed and toured various projects, including a housing development named after MDC activist Tonderai Ndira, who was abducted and murdered by agents of Zanu PF.
