Ten Roman Catholic priests have been charged with sexually abusing an altar boy in Spain.
Court documents showed the abuse at a house rented for the purpose by the priests in Granada, Spain, started in 2005 when he was 14 and lasted for three years. The victim, now 24, received a personal apology on the phone from Pope Francis in 2014 after he wrote to him complaining. It was not immediately known if Francis had offered compensation.
The archbishop of Granada, Francisco Javier Martinez said he had suspended several priests linked to the case. The Vatican said it had suspended 850 priests over similar allegations between 2004 and 2013. Human rights defenders, however, said the pope should do more to protect potential victims, including nuns, from predatory priests around the world.
