Former finance minister Tendai Biti says the nearly 91 year-old Zimbabwean dictator Robert Mugabe is incapable of resolving worsening economic problems and a deepening political crisis in the country, and should resign.
Speaking in Harare Wednesday, Biti -secretary-general of the MDC Renewal Team – said it was time for Mugabe and Zanu PF to give up power or face the wrath of the people. Biti proposed setting up an interim administration, known as the National Transitional Techninical Council (NTTC) to revive the economy and supervise political reforms and create conditions for a free and fair election in 2018.
“However, Zanu PF in its arrogance will clearly not give in to the proposed NTTC. Therefore, the onus is on the people of Zimbabwe to free themselves by confronting the Zanu PF dictatorship. Zanu PF is not interested in dialogue and in respecting the citizen. Therefore, it is up to the people to use their constitutional rights and confront Zanu PF,” said Biti.
Biti said the country’s economy had been shrinking since the current administration came into office after disputed elections in 2013 and was now “clearly in recession”.
“It is clear that left on its own the Zanu PF government is clueless and will continue to implement and execute epileptic and wrong policies,” said Biti.
Six thousand companies had been closed since 2013 plunging two million people onto the jobless heap, he said.
Biti said corruption was endemic and getting worse.
