Residents of Hopley claimed on Thursday that ‘many deaths’ were occuring in the area and they suspected this was caused by dirty water in a vast compound of shacks with no piped water.
The claims were made during MDC president Morgan Tsvangirai’s tour of the farm settlement in Harare South, in the company of mayor Bernard Manyenyeni.
A nurse at the only clinic in the area confirmed the prevalence of diarrhoea. She told the former prime minister that the clinic was overwhelmed, having to serve 120 000 people.
Tsvangirai expressed shock at the reports of deaths, squalid living conditions and the poor state of roads.
“After the tour, President Tsvangirai urged the mayor to take action and ensure that the people’s health and safety are a top priority,” the MDC said in a statement.
Mayor Manyenyenyi said the Harare city council wanted to act but was constrained by limited resources.
