Contempt charges have been raised in the high court against prosecutor-general Johannes Tomana after he defied an order to have Bikita West MP Dr Munyaradzi Kereke charged with rape of a minor.
Kereke allegedly raped an 11 year-old girl at gunpoint at his Vainona, Harare, home. Tomana has repeatedly refused to bring Kereke to trial claiming there was no evidence.
However, on May 14 2014, high court judge Happias Zhou ordered Tomana to issue a certificate allowing the girl’s family to prosecute Kereke privately.
On Tuesday, the unnamed girl’s guardian, Francis Maramwidze, filed papers asking the high court to find Tomana in contempt of court and jail him for six months or fine him $1 000 if he complies with the order in five days.
