Information minister and Zanu PF politburo member Jonathan Moyo on Tuesday held an emmergency meeting with senior party officials to frame treason charges against fired party leader Didymus Mutasa, party insiders told Now Daily exclusively.
This followed Monday’s damning statement by Mutasa, in which he claimed to be still secretary for administration of Zanu PF representing “loyal” party members . Mutasa berated party president Robert Mugabe and accused him of dictatorship and straying from the party’s core values.
Mutasa accused Mugabe of being used by a corrupt, violent clique of party newcomers, including Moyo – amafikizolo – to violate the party’s constitution.
The sources said Moyo had secured the support of the senior party officials to have Mutasa imprisoned and eliminated.
Moyo was scheduled to publish a statement on Wednesday stating the group – and Mugabe’s – position.
The sources said Moyo was stung by Mutasa’s statement and reports that the Joice Mujuru group – now known as Zanu PF Renewal Team – wanted Mugabe removed for failing to handle the crisis.
“In the build-up to this illegal congress, it became clear that this clique of evil plotters had succesfully waylaid Amai Grace Mugabe and Comrade Robert Gabriel Mugabe and started using them as weapons to unleash venomous and uncouth statements against anyone they perceived to be standing for the original Zanu PF values, ideals and ethos,” Mutasa said.
Mugabe was also said to have been infuriated by Mutasa’s attacks on his ‘wayward’ wife Grace Mugabe, who was endorsed at the “illegal, so-called congress” in December as Zanu PF women’s league boss.
Mutasa called for restoration of party structures which existed on July 1, 2014 saying the ‘votes of no-confidence’ passed against numerous party leaders were illegal.
Mutasa reserved his most bitter criticism for Grace Mugabe, saying her nationwide rallies had “left a trail of destruction and division in the party”.
“Outside the party and the country’s constitutions and any moral tenets, Amai Grace Mugabe went around the country preaching the gospel of hate in the presence of our very impressionable youths and the traumatized impoverished population,” Mutasa said.
Sources said Moyo was part of a group working to destroy Zanu PF from within by making unwarranted attacks against senior Mugabe loyalists.
