Two suspects found in a car carrying 103 kg of marijuana worth $10 000 got away on Sunday after they abandoned their car and fled from the police on foot, the authorities said.
Questions have been raised about how heavily armed police let the suspects run away on foot, amid fears that the cops were bribed to facilitate the getaway. Zimbabwean police are the third most corrupt force in Africa, after Nigeria and Egypt, says polling group Afrobarometer.
Police spokesman Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the escape and said the cops were looking for two men who fled from a checkpoint along the Mutare-Masvingo highway. Only one suspect, the driver, was arrested, but he has since claimed that he was just hired to carry the undisclosed cargo wrapped in a blanket.
Dhewa said the suspects were carrying several sacks of marijuana in a Toyota Vitz from Mozambique, destined for Botswana.
