United Family International Church (UFIC) leader Emmanuel Makandiwa has riled followers and shocked analysts with his ‘crass ignorance’ of the causes of international sanctions against the Zimbabwean dictator Robert Mugabe.
Makandiwa claimed falsely on Sunday that Mugabe had been blacklisted because of his opposition to homosexuality.
He said: “To those countries (the West), homosexuality is a right that they have claimed our president is abusing.”
Analysts rejected Makandiwa’s claims.
“The evidence is there that Mugabe is being punished for genocide and crimes against humanity, for mass political murder against opponents, violence, torture, rape, repression, vote-rigging, destruction of property and seizure of farms and businesses without compensation,” said analyst Chris Mitchell.
Mitchell suggested Makandiwa was begging for Mugabe’s protection from charges of tax evasion and money laundering that he faces in ongoing investigations. The authorities are trying to establish how the former AFM junior pastor surviving on church handouts suddenly became a multi-millionaire.
Makandiwa, who claims to be a prophet, has been accused by fellow pastors of using voodoo or magic. West African preachers who said they wanted to prove the claims were mysteriously denied visas by the government.
Makandiwa is also desperate to continue receiving grants from the Central Intelligence Organisation, which now seems more keen to fund Walter Magaya’s Prophetic Healing and Deliverance ministry, sources said.
Makandiwa’s CIO brief was to give false hope to Zimbabweans that their situation is improving under Mugabe when it is worsening, the sources said.
Makandiwa has made numerous false prophecies, including one that diamonds and gold would fall from the sky like rain. He also claimed he could walk on Lake Kariba but backtracked when challenged to do so.
