Zanu PF has barred former Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor Gideon Gono, who is accused of having a roaring affair with president Robert Mugabe’s wife Grace Mugabe, from assuming the vacant Manicaland senatorial post, it emerged.
This is considered a major slap in the face for the first lady, who has previously stated publicly that she wants to succeed her ailing husband. Insiders said Grace Mugabe had indicated privately that she would want to rule alongside Gono if she came to power. The senate appointment would have helped him learn the ropes of government, sources said.
Manicaland province Zanu PF acting chairperson Samuel Undenge confirmed Gono’s bid had been rejected, amid accusations that the former finance chief had associated himself with ousted vice president Joice Mujuru.
Undenge made no reference to Gono’s alleged fornication with Grace Mugabe, which sources say the president is aware of.
“The province unanimously agreed that Comrade Shadreck Chipanga should be the senator for Manicaland,” Undenge said. “Cde Chipanga is a central committee member and a very senior member in the party. He is a war veteran who was a commander during the war. So he was chosen because of his seniority and long service in the party.”
Mugabe turned against his former friend Gono around 2010 when his dying sister Sabina told him about his wife’s adultery with the former banker. In 2013, Mugabe rejected an application by Gono to have his contract extended by a year. Gono once told US diplomats that he was doing Mugabe a favour by sleeping with his young wife as the old dictator had completely lost interest in sex while she craved for it. Gono is now mired in debts, according to sources.
