Former Budiriro Vapositori sect leader Ishmael Chokurongerwa (Mufani) has been taken into custody after seven months on the run, police said.
Chokurongerwa was arrested in Murewa, the cops said.
The fugitive sect leader fled Harare after he led supporters to attack police officers who raided his shrine in Budiriro looking for evidence of sexual abuse of women.
Nearly 40 of Chokurongerwa’s supporters were arrested after the controversial religious leader escaped a police dragnet. Several followers were convicted for violence and sentenced to four years in prison.
The violent sect members also battered ZBC cameraman Relax Mafuruti and members of the Apostolic Christian Council of Zimbabwe led by Johannes Ndanga, who had gone to shut down their operations.
The blitz on the sect was triggered by reports that Chokurongerwa and his group prevented young girls from going to school and then sexually abused them.
