Indifferent to the suffering experienced by most Zimbabweans, president Robert Mugabe and his huge entourage headed off to Singapore, one of the most expensive holiday destinations in the world.
At the weekend, impoverished Zimbabweans were shocked to discover that Mugabe and his troop had partied wildly at the expensive Namadan restaurant on the island.
Rare images posted online by Robert Mugabe Jr showed a tipsy Grace Mugabe surrounded by glasses of red wine and port champaigne in front of an evidently pissed Mugabe, with drunk son in law Simba Chikore dancing wildly in the background. The pictures threw fresh light on the vulgar lifestyles enjoyed by Zimbabwe’s so-called ‘first family’ amid a sea of poverty.
Catholics around the world, in online forums, have condemned the extravagant lifestyle displayed by Mugabe and his former typist second wife Grace Mugabe.
The commentators said this show of wealth violated teachings of the Roman Catholic church, of which Mugabe is a leading member who has met several pontiffs.
Delivering Christmas messages last week, Pope Francis condemned the “disease of indifference towards others (which) arises when each person thinks only of himself”.
Francis also criticized the practice of “deifying leaders” and said some considered themselves “immortal”. Mugabe, who turns 91 in February, has refused to resign from both party and government despite faltering health, including partial blindness. Mugabe caused his party to nominate him as their next presidential candidate in 2018, when he will be 94 and will be expected to complete a five-year term when he is 99.
Pope Francis also attacked “the disease of accumulation” when a leader “seeks to fill an existential emptiness of the heart by accumulating material goods, not out of necessity but simply to feel secure. Accumulation only burdens and inexorably slows down our progress”.
Mugabe and his wife Grace Mugabe are reported to have stashed billions of dollars looted from the state in foreign banks. They also regularly plunder the state treasury to go on foreign jaunts.
