The Zanu PF congress ended on a discordant note Saturday after party president broke with tradition and refused to name a new politburo.
Only Mugabe himself, his wife Grace and Kudzai Chipanga were confirmed as president and first secretary, secretary for women’s affairs and youth league secretary respectively.
The move has opened the way for intense horse-trading as all positions are now up for grabs.
Crucially, Mugabe was expected to announce two party vice presidents, who could automatically fill the two ‘vacant’ posts of state vice presidents.
Joice Mujuru has already lost her post as party vice president amid recriminations. She is now expected to give up her government position.
Mugabe said he would name politburo members on Wednesday.
