President Robert Mugabe has technically fired his rebel deputy, Joice Mujuru, after leading the Zanu PF politburo in approving unprecedented party constitutional changes favouring the appointment of his preferred successor, justice minister Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Mugabe forcefully pushed for the amendments, expected to be rubberstamped by the central committee, enabling him to choose all politburo members, a change from the past when all posts were elected.
“Mugabe will most certainly use his sweeping new powers to sack Mujuru and appoint Mnangagwa to deputise him. More importantly, for advancing his dynastic ambitions, he will quickly entrench his wife Grace and all those he thinks are favourable to him,” said a Zanu PF insider. “Its over for Mujuru.”
State media reported that Mugabe confronted de facto state security minister Didymus Mutasa and his predecessor Nicholas Goche over allegations they plotted to topple him through a military coup funded by billionairess Mujuru.
