The race to succeed ailing President Robert Mugabe (90) in Zanu PF turned ugly recently with Zvishavane-Ngezi MP John Holder being brutally assaulted by party youths for his alleged allegiance to a splinter group led by Justice Minister Emmerson Mnangagwa.
The attack happened at the funeral of a Zanu PF youth member who was hit by a car while returning from the recent women’s league conference that endorsed Grace Mugabe as female party boss.
Eyewitnesses said Holder was beaten with sticks all over the body after relatives accused him of representing the interests of feuding Zanu PF heavies eyeing the presidency after Mugabe goes. Holder was also recently ejected amid threats from the Zvishavane funeral of a councillor from a faction led by Joice Mujuru.
Serious political violence, instigated by the Mujuru faction, has been reported in the Midlands province.
