Female soldiers have stopped enrolling for commando training at the notorious former Selous Scouts training camp in Kariba citing rape and brutality by trainers and fellow trainees.
The rape and brutal torture and death stories were confirmed to Now Daily by serving and retired soldiers whom we can not name.
“The few women who have attempted special forces training either withdrew or were warned not to go to Wafa Wafa,” said a former commando. “I saw horrific things at Wafa Wafa. The women were first subjected to brutal beatings and torture by the trainers. After that they were raped. It always started with beatings, which was to warn the women that they could be killed if they resisted.”
The Zimbabwean army’s staff officer, Colonel Steven Gwekwerere, however, accused the women of refusing to volunteer, saying they were not tough enough.
“Commando training by its nature is very tough and those who join do so voluntarily,” Gwekwerere said.
