Police in Zvishavane this week launched a massive operation to rid this budgeoning platinum and diamond mining boomtown of illegal vendors and unlicensed taxis suspected of aiding criminals.
Police officers in a bakkie went around the surbubs on Monday, warning residents to desist from illegal trade.
The next day they started by arresting vendors, taxi operators and illegal money changers at Mandava rank. The heavily armed cops then went on to raid cellphone traders at ‘Pelhams’, a haven of illegality, drug and sex trafficking.
“They took away my airtime worth $150,” claimed one woman, who was found wailing along the town’s main street, aptly named Robert Mugabe Avenue.
“The cops impounded my car over a minor thing. I had to pay $100 to get it out. They are now targetting all vehicles, not just taxis. And they want heavy bribes to co-operate,” said a distraught motorist.
