The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights lobby group has accused the police of abusing the Public Order and Security Act to limit citizens’ rights.
In a statement, ZLHR deplored the weekend arrests of four Bulawayo Agenda officials and disruption of their meeting in Victoria Falls by the police.
“ZLHR is concerned by the police’s obsession to continue curtailing citizens fundamental rights by abusing and using some provisions of POSA as the arrest of the Bulawayo Agenda officials contravenes Section 58 of the Constitution which guarantees freedom of assembly and association,” ZLHR said in a statement.
The lawyers named the arrested Agenda members as Mmeli Dube, Buthelezwe Kgosi Nyathi, Ntombiyezansi Mabunda Tozana and Thulani Moyo who “endured two nights in police custody” on allegations they held a meeting in the tourist town without notifying the authority.
Lawyer Thulani Nkala of ZLHR secured the release of three of the suspects on $100 bail while Moyo was bailed out at $50 before magistrate Sharon Rosimani.
