Exiled Zimbabwean journalist Mxolisi Ncube has been arrested in South Africa after police claimed he was one of the administrators of the Baba Jukwa mystery blog.
Ncube’s lawyer Obert Gutu confirmed the journalist handed himself over to officials at the Zimbabwean embassy in Pretoria on Sunday.
Ncube, who is on official asylum in SA was forced by the embassy officials to record a statement over the telephone with police law and order section boss assistant commissioner Crispen Makedenge in Harare.
Ncube denies links to Baba Jukwa, the notorious whistleblower who exposed Zanu PF murders, election rigging and corruption.
Zimbabwean officials were making frantic efforts to have the law waived so they could transfer Ncube to Harare. Ncube is the SA bureau chief for The Zimbabwean, a London-based newspaper which published some of Baba Jukwa’s sensational revelations. The paper’s editor Wilf Mbanga is also being sought by police but denies he was involved in running the Baba Jukwa account.
Police have also confirmed the arrest of University of Zimbabwe student Romeo Musemburi over comments he allegedly posted on the Baba Jukwa account on Facebook.
