SCANDAL: Zvishavane Council Under-sells Prime Land to Broke Developer

The Zvishavane Town Council (ZTC) has come under fire from residents after transferring vast tracts of prime land to Forit Construction without receiving any payment.
NOW DAILY has since established that Forit has started selling the land at inflated prices without developing it, in violation of the country’s land laws.
Council sources confirmed that Forit, which is owned by Harare-based indigenous businessmen, had failed to raise nearly $2 million for the land measuring about two million square metres.
ZTC has been criticized heavily for under-selling the land. According to official sources, the council sold the industrial land for $1 per square metre. Forit is now selling it for a whopping $30 per square metre, meaning the company will nearly $60 million from it.
The scandal has divided the MDC-dominated council, with some saying council should have sold the land directly to the public at the low prices offered to Forit, which has now failed to pay.
Forit’s managing director, Itai Madziyire was recently summoned by councillors to explain why the company had failed to pay for the land or to service nearly 2 000 stands the company is now selling.
