United States President Barack Obama announced Monday he is beefing up security at American facilities in Iraq with the deployment of an additional 275 soldiers, including crack marines.
Obama made the announcement in a letter to the U.S. Congress, citing the War Powers Resolution.
“The force is deploying for the purpose of protecting U.S. citizens and property, if necessary, and is equipped for combat,” Obama said. “This force will remain in Iraq until the security situation becomes such that it is no longer needed.”
Official sources told NOW DAILY USA that 160 troops were already in Iraq, including 50 marines and 100 army. Another 100 were to be stationed in a third country in the region for emmergency deployment, the sources said.
U.S. officials confirmed that ‘non-essential’ staff were being moved from the embassy in Baghdad to other facilities in the city amid threats by the militant Islamic State of Iraq (ISIS) rebel movement rampaging through the country.
The U.S. Center for Strategic Studies warned in a major study Monday that Iraq was fast descending into civil war.
