Tortured VaPositori Denied Bail

A magistrate has ordered prison authorities to treat nearly 30 members of an apostolic cult for injuries suffered when they were tortured by the police.
Magistrate Vakai Chikwekwe remanded 26 of them in custody to June 16 but said they should be given immediate medical attention.
The suspects told the court that they were brutally assaulted by police.
The Movement For Democratic Change called for a “serious” investigation into the torture allegations.
The party’s shadow minister for Home Affairs, Senator Lilian Timveos told NOW DAILY exclusively that the police were largely to blame for the ongoing violence in Budiriro. ZRP officers were filmed on Monday leading marauding bands of armed Zanu PF militia who went on a rampage attacking suspected members of the Johane Masowe Echishanu cult led by Ishmael Mufani. The Zanu PF militia destroyed Mufani’s shrine at Budiriro 2 Park. Police have failed to locate the controversial cult leader.
“We are concerned about the gross violations of human rights perpetrated by the police, from the time they went to that shrine without a warrant or court order to the torture of suspects in detention,” Timveos said.
“Instead of investigating and seeking justice, the police are now executing revenge.”
MDC Harare Province spokesman Obert Gutu said it was shameful that the police had sub-contracted their duties to ruthless Zanu PF militia in Budiriro.
