Nelson Mandela has died.
The 95-year-old former South African president died at home in Johannesburg Thursday evening after battling recurring lung infections.
“He passed on peacefully in the company of his family around 20 h 50,” president Jacob Zuma said in a statement.
Zuma added: “Our nation has lost its greatest son.”
Mandela spent 27 years in SA jails while fighting apartheid.
President Robert Mugabe of neighbouring Zimbabwe, whose “smash and grab” policies shocked Mandela, did not immediately react to the death.
British prime minister David Cameron said, “A great light has gone out in the world.”
