Defiant Movement for Democratic Change president Morgan Tsvangirai says his party won Wednesday’s election, despite the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission declaring Robert Mugabe and Zanu PF the winners.
“From the evidence available, discounting all ommissions and commissions, the MDC won that election,” Tsvangirai said.
He said the party would challenge Mugabe’s victory in court and at SADC on the basis that the process was fraught with irregularities and agreed pre-election reforms were not implemented. Tsvangirai also urged the regional grouping to investigate the role of the military in running the election.
The MDC-T leader, however, said he had no faith in Zimbabwe’s courts, whose judges are accused of being loyal to Mugabe. He said the party was pursuing other initiatives, which he did not disclose, to force another election before Mugabe’s term expires in 2018.
“The courts are only one option we will be pursuing. There are many other strategies, some of which I can not share publicly with the press,” Tsvangirai said.
