The African National Congress of South Africa (ANC) has accused Zanu PF of destabilising it by supporting ousted radical former youth league president Julius Malema.
ANC secretary-general Gwede Manthashe said Malema’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) had adopted Zanu PF ideas on grabbing of farmland without compensation and nationalisation of mines.
Manthashe, who was at the Zanu PF congress in 2011 with a message of support, attacked Robert Mugabe’s party on Monday, accusing it of bankrolling Malema. He said Mugabe’s support had helped Malema destroy ANC structures in Limpopo.
Intelligence sources in Zim had confirmed earlier that Malema, an avowed admirer of Mugabe, had been given blood diamond money by the dictator.
“The EFF has the influence of Zanu PF. There have been active engagements between its leaders and Zanu PF. Zanu PF is using them to destabilise the ANC in Limpopo,” Manthashe told journalists.
“Zanu PF destroyed the economy of their country. In 1980, the value of the Zimdollar was R1.50 and today it has no value. It is a massive destruction of the economy. I do not want SA’s economy to collapse,” Manthashe said.
The ANC has previously declared its support for Mugabe but SA’s role as SADC mediator in the Zimbabwean crisis has strained relations, with Zanu PF attacks on president Jacob Zuma intensifying.
